Master of Percentages was the original name for Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” The album was originally conceived of as a homage to comedian Bob Newhart. The liner notes even included detailed fan fiction about his unlikely rise from middle-brow accountant to television superstar. They decided to change the title at the last minute, bowing to label pressure for a more extreme image. To this day, fans still look at this as the reason why Jethro Tull won the grammy over Metallica for Best Heavy Metal Act of 1989.
